CROWNS AND BRIDGES

  • Dental Crowns and bridges are fixed restorations that are cemented onto existing teeth. Crowns are used most commonly to entirely cover a damaged tooth. Bridges are commonly used to cover a space if one or more teeth are missing. They are fixed to to natural teeth with special cements.
  • In addition to strengthening a damaged tooth, dental crown and bridges be used to improve a tooth shape, appearance, alignment and bite (dental occlusion).
  • Spaces left by missing teeth can cause the remaining teeth to shift/move, which can result in a bad bite. Moreover, the teeth opposite to missing teeth can capture tartar and periodontal problems. Bridges and crowns help prevent this from happening.

FAQ

What are crowns?

If a tooth has been broken, or weakened by a lot of decay or a large filling, or has been treated with RCT, a crown can be made to strengthen the tooth. At DentaSculpt Dental Clinic, we match the crown’s shape and color to your other teeth to make the crown look natural. The crown can last for many years, depending on the health of the tooth underneath. A temporary crown is put over the tooth until the permanent crown is prepared.

What are bridges?

A dental bridge is made up of two or more crowns(cap) for the teeth on either side of the gap. This bridge is permanently fixed to healthy supporting teeth. It is used to replace missing tooth/teeth, giving back its appearance and function. Various material used for making bridge are Porcelain fused to metal or METAL FREE (Zircon). For preparing for a bridge, the dentist needs to shape the teeth either side of the gap so that they will successfully hold the bridge..

What is the process for obtaining a crown or bridge?

The process of fitting crowns and bridges requires two visits.

1. During the FIRST VISIT, we assess the health of your teeth. In case of crowns the tooth receiving the crown is shaped. In case of bridges the supporting teeth are shaped. The tooth color is recorded to match the correct colour of porcelain.

Impressions are taken of the prepared teeth and the teeth of the opposite jaw.

A temporary bridge or crown may be bonded to protect the prepared teeth between visits. You are instructed to avoid sticky food.

2. During the SECOND VISIT: After removing temporary crown/bridge, the permanent crown or bridge is checked for colour and fit. Next, it is permanently fixed in place with special cements.

How do I care for my crown or bridge?

After the crowns and bridges are fixed, you should continue to follow good oral hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day

Crown/Bridges are fixed with very strong cements, so they cannot be removed for cleaning. To keep the teeth healthy, you can clean below the bridges with specially designed flosses or with WATER FLOSSER DEVICE.
